ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applied Science

Master of Science Degree in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Biological Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology.

  • Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed before admission. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree in Analytical Chemistry

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree in Applied Mathematical Modelling

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Statistics, Computer Science or Operations Research. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience or,

  • Applicants with at least an Upper Second (2.1) Honours degree class in a programme with a significant Mathematical content as determined by the Departmental Board.

Master of Science Degree in Big Data Science 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Computing (Computer Engineering, Informatics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering), Electronic Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Business Analytics or Operations Research. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree in Information Systems

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least an Upper Second (2.1) in Computing (Computer Engineering, Informatics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering) Electronic Engineering.

Master of Science Degree in Geophysics

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Applied Physics or Geology.

  • Applicants with a BSc Honours Degree in Geology with a minimum classification of Upper Second (2.1) may be considered for admission if they have a good mathematics background.  
  • Any other equivalent qualifications obtained   from recognised institutions in Zimbabwe or elsewhere may be considered for admission.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree in Lasers and Applied Optics

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Applied Physics or Physics. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience. 

For those applicants who do not have an Honours Degree in Physics or Applied Physics, the level of Physics background will be considered adequate if an applicant has passed the following courses or their equivalent:

  • Thermal Physics
  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Electromagnetism
  • Atomic Physics
  • Nuclear Physics

Master of Science Degree in Medical Physics

             

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Applied Physics or Biophysics. Preference shall be given to those already working in the Health Delivery Sector. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree  in Radiography
  • Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Radiography 
  • Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above field will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.
  • In addition, applicants must be registered or be eligible for registration with the Allied Health Practitioners Council. 

Master of Science Degree in Medical Ultrasound

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Radiography, (Diagnostic or Therapeutic). 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience. 

In addition, applicants must be registered with or are eligible for registration with the Allied Health Practitioner’s Council of Zimbabwe. programme 

Any other relevant qualification obtained from a recognised institution in Zimbabwe or elsewhere may be considered for admission.

Master of Science Degree in Operations Research and Statistics

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Computing, Bachelor of Education Honours Degree in Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in any field. 

Applicants with a lower Second (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience or a Postgraduate qualification in a related field.

Master of Science Degree in Sports Science

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Sports Science or related field. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience or an internationally recognised coaching qualification or license which is equivalent to an Honours First Degree from a Sport Federation or Institution of a similar kind.

Master of Science Degree in Computer Science

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least 2.2 in Computing: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, Information Systems, Software Engineering or Electronic Engineering.

The Built Environment

Master of Science Degree in Construction Project Management

 

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Quantity Surveying, Architecture, Rural & Urban Planning, Building Economics, Civil Engineering or Property Management.   

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.         

 

Master of Urban Design

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least (2.1) in Urban Design, Architecture, Rural Urban Planning, Building Economics, Civil Engineering and Property Management. Other programmes offered in the built environment shall be considered on an individual basis with a Minimum overall pass of Upper Second Class (2.1) 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least 2 years’ post qualification experience.

 

Master of Philosophy Degree in Property Studies

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least (2.1) in Urban Design, Architecture, Rural Urban Planning, Building Economics, Civil Engineering and Property Management. Other programmes offered in the built environment shall be considered on an individual basis with a Minimum overall pass of Upper Second Class (2.1) 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least 2 years’ post qualification experience.

Commerce

Master of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, B Com Honours Degree or equivalent with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Accounting or equivalent.

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of Financial Reporting and Financial Analysis.

Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, CIS will be an added advantage.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Science Degree in Banking and Financial Economics

Applicants must be holders of a good Honours Degree in Banking, Finance, Economics or their equivalents with a degree classification of at least 2.2

Master of Science Degree in Financial Engineering

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, B Com Honours Degree or equivalent with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in any field with a financial and mathematical content.

Preference will be given to applicants with a strong mathematical background.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience

Master of Science Degree in Finance and Investment

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, B Com Honours Degree or equivalent with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in a Commercial Degree or equivalent.

In addition, applicants should have completed and passed Corporate Finance.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience

Master of Science Degree in Fiscal Studies

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, B Com Honours Degree or equivalent with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Fiscal Studies, Public Finance, Customs, Taxation, Economics or equivalent.

A Bachelors’ Honours Degree in any discipline plus an acceptable Postgraduate Diploma in the above disciplines.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

 

Master of Science Degree in Risk Management and Insurance

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree, BComm Honours Degree or equivalent with a degree class of at least Lower Second (2.1) in Risk Management and Insurance, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or any Business related fields.

                            or

Applicants must hold a Commercial Degree or equivalent, preferably with a Lower Second Class (2.2) or better, from a recognised University; coupled with a Professional Qualification in Insurance and/or Risk Management from a recognised Institution/Professional body.

 

Master of Science Degree in Strategic Marketing

 

Applicants must be holders of a BComm Honours Degree in Marketing or any business-related field from a recognized University.  Holders of non-marketing or business Degrees with experience in the marketing field and who have completed and passed any two of the following modules in their Undergraduate Degree will also be considered: Principles of Economics, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management 

and any of the following:

  • Financial Management, Statistics, Accounting Principles, Quantitative Analysis of Business and Research Methodology.
  • Holders of non-business related Degrees with relevant and recognised Post-graduate Diplomas in Marketing or other business-related fields and a minimum of two years’ experience in the field of marketing will also be considered for admission into this programme.

Institute of Development Studies

 

Master of Science Degree in Development Studies (2 years)
  • Applicants must holder a Bachelor’s Degree in Development Studies or equivalent from a recognised university. 
  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience in the field of development or equivalent will be an added advantage.

Master of Science Degree in Disaster Management (2 years)
  • Applicant must be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Development Studies or equivalent from a recognised university.
  • Or Hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience in the field of Disaster Risk and Emergence Management or equivalent will be an added advantage.

Communication and Information Science

Master of Science Degree in Strategic Communication

 

Applicants must be holders of an Honours Degree, with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Social Sciences, Arts or Business related studies.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2 Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience 

Special Entry

Candidates with Higher National Diplomas in Social Sciences, Arts and Business related studies plus 3 years post qualification experience in communication and strategic related field.

Master of Science Degree in Journalism and Media Studies

 

 

Applicants must be holders of an Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Journalism and or Media Studies or related discipline such as Communication Studies, Public Relations and Advertising. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least three years’ post-qualification practical experience in a recognized media house.

  • Applicants with any first Degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and or Media Studies or related fields may be admitted into the programme.

Master of Science Degree in Library and Information Science

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Library and Information Science or in any other Information Science field (Archives, Records Management, Publishing, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and Museology studies).  

At least a Lower Second Class (2.2) Degree in any other field plus a Postgraduate qualification or an equivalent in Library and Information Science.

Applicants who have obtained Degree Class of a Pass (3) in any Information Science field listed in the first criteria and at least five (5) years’ relevant experience in information related sciences may be considered for admission.

Master of Science Degree in Records and Archives Management

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Records and Archives Management; Records Management; Archival Science; Information Studies; History or Heritage Studies from an accredited University or higher education institution.

Applicants with a Lower Second Class 2.2 Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

  • Applicants with any first Degree in a field other than those listed above will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification practical experience in a records and archives related establishment.

Engineering

Master of Engineering Degree in Manufacturing Systems and Operations Management (MSOM)

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Engineering, such as Industrial, Industrial and Manufacturing, Manufacturing, Production, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Chemical, Electrical, Electrical and Electronics and Fibre and Polymer Materials Engineering.

  • Applicants with a Lower Second Class 2.2 Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Engineering Degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Management (MEOM)

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Engineering, such as Industrial, Industrial and Manufacturing, Manufacturing, Production, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Chemical, Electrical, Electrical and Electronics and Fibre and Polymer Materials Engineering.

  •  Applicants with a Lower Second Class 2.2 Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years’ post-qualification experience.

Master of Engineering Degree in Chemical and Environmental Process Engineering

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Lower Second (2.2) in Chemical Engineering or related disciplines such as Environmental Engineering, Applied Biochemistry, Applied Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Process Engineering or Petrochemical Engineering from an accredited college or university.

Post qualification work experience is an added advantage.

NB Admission into the programme will be subject to adequate numbers of applicants qualifying to make a class.

Environmental Science

Master of Science Degree in Environmental Health

 

Applicants should be in possession of:

  • A Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Environmental Science and Health,
  • Bachelor of Environmental Science Honours Degree in Public Health

or any other related field with at least a Lower Second

Degree classification (2.2).

The duration of the programme will be 24 months (2 years).

 

Master of Science Degree in Eco-tourism and Biodiversity Conservation

 

 

Applicants must be holders of a BSc Honours Degree with a degree class of at least Upper Second (2.1) in Forest Resources and Wildlife Management, Animal Science, Natural Resources Management or any relevant Science Degree.

  • Relevant work experience and professional qualifications in Eco-tourism, Strategic Marketing and Business Management will be an added advantage. 

Applicants with a Lower Second Class (2.2) Honours Degree in the above fields will be required to have at least two years post-qualification experience.

 

Master of Science Degree in Applied Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing

Normal entry:  Applicants should have a BSc Degree with a Lower Second Class (2.2) in Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Life Sciences and related Geospatial Disciplines with a significant Geographical Information Systems content.

Special entry:  Candidates with a BSc Honours Degree at 2.2 and at least three years of relevant work experience.

NB Only candidates who already have BSc (Honours) results will be considered for this programme.

Medicine

Master of Science Degree in Midwifery Education

 

Applicants must be holders of a relevant BSc Honours Degree in Nursing or related field. In addition, applicants should hold:

  • Midwifery post basic qualification (Diploma or higher).
  • A valid practicing certificate with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe.
  • Applicants should have at least one-year post- qualification experience.

Master of Medicine Degree in Family Medicine MMED FAM. MED)

 

 Applicants must be holders of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.

  • Have completed a General Medical Education (GME) post internship.
  • Have a current registration and practising certificate with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe (MDPCZ).
  • This qualification in Family Medicine is intended for doctors in possession of a first degree in medicine to acquire additional knowledge, skills and attitude to enable them to:
  • Provide competent, comprehensive and continuous patient-centered medical care, using the biopsychosocial model, in a continuum across all facilities in the district and provincial health system. This includes curative, preventive, promotive, palliative and rehabilitative care.

NB Short-listed Applicants for admission to the MMED Degree in Family Medicine programme may be interviewed as part of the selection process.

GOVERNMENT is placing special attention on construction works at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) as it is poised to be a bedrock of the country’s industrialisation and modernisation, which has seen it receiving the highest budgetary allocation.

The Second Republic has shown a new impetus towards the development of NUST whose construction projects have been stagnant for years.

NUST received the highest budgetary allocation among State universities in the 2023 National Budget presented by the Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube last  Thursday. For the second year running, NUST has been allocated money reaching the $1 billion

mark towards construction works. Treasury allocated $9,8 billion towards infrastructure development at State universities with NUST chewing over $1,2 billion from the total amount.

It is the only university to get a budgetary provision exceeding $1 billion. The university was allocated $600 million towards the construction of the NUST library while $500 million was budgeted towards the construction of the Technovation Centre, formerly the Students Service Centre as well as $130 million for innovation hubs and industrial parks. From the $130 million, $80 million is for the innovation hub and $50 million for the development of the industrial park, an amount which was also allocated across all 11 state universities.  As a result of Government continued funding, relative progress has been registered in the  construction of outstanding buildings at NUST such as the Technovation Centre.

NUST is supposed to have 27 buildings, but only seven have been completed and some buildings are now dilapidated. A construction crane which had become a symbol of lack of progress at NUST for years has been removed from the NUST library site. Recently, President Mnangagwa laid a foundation stone for the construction of the Technovation Centre.

President Mnangagwa said the Technovation Centre must empower academics and students to develop cutting edge science, technology and innovation-based solutions to solve societal challenges and exploit opportunities which the economy has to offer. In an interview, Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira, said NUST is strategic towards the country’s industrialisation agenda.

As a result, he said more attention will be placed towards its development as it had for years had lagged behind in terms of infrastructure development.  “Science and technology innovation are the bedrock of our progress and NUST is a very important leading university which is actually a university of science and technology. It therefore means we are paying special attention to NUST because for years NUST was in the wrangles of construction contracts and all sorts of things and we have overcome all that,” he said.

“We are now constructing NUST on our own and the road is very clear and the intentions are very clear to make NUST the mother university of science, technology and innovation.”

He said NUST is a specialised university which requires specific infrastructure and the Government is going to fill its infrastructural gaps.  Prof Murwira said the thrust that the Government has for NUST is in tandem with Vision 2030.  “As NUST is our mother university in terms of science, technology and innovation, so we are just behaving according to our intentions,” said Prof Murwira.

He said funding for universities is important for the country in driving a knowledge based economy.

Prof Murwira said infrastructure development has to align with Heritage Based Education 5.0 which aims to use local resources for national development. “The programmes should be answering to human needs, human capital, the staffing has to be appropriate, the physical and digital infrastructure has to be appropriate in line with our intention to use knowledge and innovation for industrialisation and modernisation,” said Prof Murwira.

“So, our intentions have to be matched by our budgeting. Our intention is to become an upper middle-income economy as enunciated by His Excellency, the President Dr. E.D Mnangagwa. Our capabilities will be developed using Heritage Based Education 5.0. But for Education 5.0 to work our programmes have to work.”

He said in doing so, Government has realigned 15 laws governing the higher and tertiary sector to create an enabling environment for the growth of the sector. “The physical and legal infrastructure is what is being reflected by the Government. The first pillar of implementing Education 5.0 is called financing infrastructure which is the budgetary allocation. So, the budgetary allocation is a reflection of our intention,” he said.

“We have national strategic intent which is to become an upper middle-income economy to industrialise and modernise the country as enunciated by His Excellency, the President Dr. E.D Mnangagwa but for that to happen we have the necessary capabilities.”

He said the Government is working to ensure staffing at the country’s universities conform to the revolution that the ministry is leading. Government through the budget is also funding other state universities. The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development allocated $700 million towards the construction of a pathology laboratory and construction of the Faculty of Law at Midlands State University.

$800 million was also allocated towards the construction of the Faculty of Humanities at Lupane State University and Gwanda State University was allocated $400 million towards rehabilitation of infrastructure, construction of a lecture block and a mining lab.

The University of Zimbabwe was allocated $400 million towards the construction of Students Affairs Building and Halls of residence, Bindura University of Science Education got a provision of $700 million for the construction of male hostels and Great Zimbabwe University was allocated $100 million to build a hospitality school. The Harare Institute of Technology was allocated $250 million for the construction of laboratory plaza and rehabilitation of infrastructure.

NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (NUST) Football Club used home advantage to full use when they edged fellow title contenders, Njube Spurs 2-0 in their encounter at NUST Sports Grounds yesterday.

Coming into the crunch tie one point behind their opponents, it took a quick-fire brace from Artwell Marume to hand the home side the much needed three points in front of their singing fans, who were up in song in the presence of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Mqhele Dlodlo.

Marume broke the deadlock in the 31st minute after pouncing on an error made by a Spurs defender and went on to double the tally two minutes later to give his side a two-goal cushion heading into half -time. With the three points in the bag, NUST head coach, Joseph Sibindi said they will keep on putting pressure on the log leaders, hoping that they drop points in their remaining matches, much to their advantage.

 “We are just trying to keep winning these last games and put pressure on the log leaders and see how the league goes. We are hoping that they can also falter just like we did. We did not manage well in some of these games because of the pressure that we have,” said Sibindi.

Sibindi said they are also dedicating the victory to Prof Dlodlo who was among the spectators. “We are happy that the Vice Chancellor also blessed us on this occasion, it was a befitting welcome for him and we really dedicate the win to him and the boys were really motivated to play,” he said. The losing coach, Lawson Nkomo said despite the defeat, he is impressed with how his charges fared in the second-half of the match thus it’s back to the drawing board for them.

“It was a tough encounter, one way or the other one of the teams was supposed to win. I am very happy with the boys, in the second half they tried to manage the game besides those few mistakes which made us concede two goals.

“We just have to go back to training and re-group and restructure and come again because we are still in the race. MR QHELANI Nyoni from Gwanda is a recipient of the US$1 000 Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Chancellor’s Award after he emerged as the Best Male graduating student at Gwanda State University in Matabeleland South. The Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Chancellor’s Award is awarded to the best male and female students graduating at each State university. Mr Nyoni graduated with an undergraduate degree in animal science and has big plans. He is not worried about getting employment as he believes the education he received at the tertiary institution will set him off for greater things.

“It is capital and at the university, I got theory and practical skills. Of course, I can learn something from the industry but on my own, I am ready to start something.” Mr Nyoni, like thousands of other recent graduates, is a beneficiary of the transformative Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Ministry’s Heritage Based Education 5.0 introduced in 2018. Heritage Based Education 5.0 aims to dismantle the colonial system of education which experts argue was not responsive to societal problems, not just in Zimbabwe but also the entire African continent, among other developing nations in the world. The continent is struggling with mass production of graduates who find it difficult to get jobs. The colonial system was specifically designed to produce a labour force for the settlers. Graduates were full of theory and their only goal was to get employed by someone, as opposed to creating employment or setting up their own companies. Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Permanent Secretary Professor Fanuel Tagwira said Heritage Based Education 5.0 is dismantling the colonial system. He was speaking at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) at an International Workshop on Leveraging Innovations for Infrastructure Development and Sustainable Development, attended by participants from South Africa, Mauritius, and Nigeria among other nations via virtual platforms.

 “I’m sure most of you know that an African education has come a long way. We adopted our education from our colonial masters which was a very elitist kind of education designed to produce native white-collar workers, who would support a particular colonial system in that particular country,” said Prof Tagwira.

“We started with imported workers coming from Europe and at some stage, they said let us train the locals. But the training was never meant to be compatible with the needs of our continent but to produce white-collar workers. And hence, the term which has gone around in terms of ivory towers, an education which focused on the heart and the mind largely ignoring the hand.” He said post-independence, most countries continued delivering the same education without questioning its relevance to society. Prof Tagwira said universities in Africa continued to churn out graduates who mirrored the thinking of former colonial masters who deliberately made sure that Africans were not skilled but highly theoretical. “This is why over time our governments had to ask, ‘Do we need these graduates? Yes, it’s nice to say we have graduated 2 000 people and after they have graduated they come back and say can you find me a job. And jobs are shrinking on the continent.

 The education we are providing is not able to create jobs. It is actually creating people who come and seek jobs. That is the major challenge that we have been facing as a continent and as a country here in Zimbabwe,” said Prof Tagwira. An innovation hub that was commissioned by President Mnangagwa at Nust recently He said President Mnangagwa’s rise to power is transforming the narrative for the higher and tertiary education sector. Prof Tagwira said while some graduates are expected to be absorbed by industry, Government’s thrust is to produce students who will create industries. “We know that Zimbabwe has really gone into a revolution and that revolution started in 2018 when the New Dispensation came into power. His Excellency, the President said he wants industrial parks and innovation hubs which will lead to innovations and industrialisation championed by Heritage Based Education 5.0,” said Prof Tagwira.

He said Zimbabwe wants to lead the pack on research in Africa observing that despite some diseases only being endemic in Africa, the medicines to treat them are produced in other continents yet raw materials obtained from the continent. “We want to focus on the heart, the mind and hands to ensure that our graduates are able to support industrialisation and infrastructure development for our country. That was the birth of Heritage Based Education 5.0 which is saying it is not enough for our universities to focus on teaching, research and community services because this is what we have been doing and there has been no change,” he said

“The idea was to ensure we also bring in innovation and industrialisation which are key pillars that will help produce a graduate who has skills and who is able to support national development.” Prof Tagwira said the adoption of the Heritage Based Education 5.0 saw universities rising to the occasion when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in 2020. He said the higher and tertiary sector saved the country millions on foreign currency through the production of sanitisers, personal protective equipment and even medical oxygen. “Even when you look at the African Union level our Heads of State have said they want an integrated, prosperous Africa driven by its citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international area. This means to produce an Africa that is driven by its citizens, it means we have to be masters of technology, we have to build innovation-led and knowledge-led economies. And we can only produce innovation-led based economies when we embrace innovation and industrialisation,” said Prof Tagwira.

Nust Vice Chancellor Prof Mqhele Dlodlo said Heritage Based Education 5.0 was important in driving Zimbabwe’s industrialisation through knowledge. “Possession of natural resources alone has failed to transform the economies of African countries as the resources are after extraction exported raw due to lack of innovations and technologies to beneficiate them,” said Prof Dlodlo.

The National University of Science and Technology (Nust) Journalism and Media Studies student said radio found her. “So, growing up, I didn’t see myself as a radio presenter, even when I got into varsity. But I always had a huge liking for television broadcasts. Bonang Matheba (a South African media personality) triggered the love for radio as watching her execute the roles that deeply inspired me to be like her and even more,” Bhebhe said

 Bhebhe vividly remembers the first time she went on air. “I remember hearing my voice for the first time on-air through those headphones. I sounded so different,” she said.  Nust.fm which is accessible on the frequency, 101.1 FM joins a list of licensed campus radio stations in the country and these include LSU Campus Radio, MSU Campus Radio, GZU Campus Radio, UZ Campus Radio, Harare Polytechnic, and CUT FM.

DOCTOR Sibonokuhle Ncube!

The calling out of her name with the prefix “Dr” in front of a sea of faces during the 28th National University of Science and Technology (Nust) graduation ceremony recently was a proud moment for the 37-year old mother of one. It was a culmination of four years of commitment, hard work, sleepless nights and the balancing act of being a mother, wife and student, all in an effort to achieve her childhood dream.

Dr Ncube (37) was among a group of seven Nust students who graduated with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Her thesis was Ethnobotany Ecology and Medicinal Efficiency of Harpagophytum also called grapple plant, wood spider, and most commonly devil’s claw. It is a genus of

plants in the sesame family, native to southern Africa.

Ethnobotany is the study of a region’s plants and their practical uses through the traditional knowledge of a local culture and people. The study provides a wealth of knowledge that contributes to the preservation of indigenous knowledge of devil’s claw, sustainable management of the plant as well as further contribute to pharmacological interventions. Devil’s claw (also known as inkunzane enkulu or igagamezi) roots have been used to treat a wide range of ailments such as fever, pain, arthritis, and indigestion. Devil’s claw tubers can be soaked in water and if dried the tubers are crushed and added to porridge. When fresh, tubers can be chewed.

Born in Bulawayo, Dr Ncube attended Thomas Rudland Primary School before proceeding to Usher High School for her O-level studies. She did her A-levels at St Patrick’s High School. Dr Ncube enrolled at Nust under the Faculty of Environmental Science in the Forest Resource and Wildlife Department and studied Forestry and Wildlife Management.

She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education with Nust and Masters Level courses with Uppsala University in Sweden. Dr Ncube, who is a lecturer at Nust, said working on her PhD was not a walk in the park.

“Personally, what drives me in life is making a positive contribution to humanity. Through my work, which I will publish I want to contribute to mankind and create a ripple effect,” she said.

“I have always had a passion in the natural resource area. In my previous job, I worked with communities that were doing value addition of natural resources, so that’s where I derive my passion from.”

Dr Ncube said for her to attain a doctorate degree, she made sacrifices and at times leaving her four-year-old son at home for months and working late at night. Turning to her study, Dr Ncube said she wanted the devil’s claw to benefit the communities from where it grows. “I opted to study this plant because it grows in areas around local communities and it’s a commercially viable with a vast potential to benefit the communities,” she said.

“I hope through my studies this can inform decision making in terms of sustainable utilisation of the plant in Zimbabwe and protect it. This plant is being exported to places like Germany, but local use is minimal.” Compared to synthetic drugs such as diclofenac, Dr Ncube said when used correctly, the devil’s claw has no side effects.

“I did tests in the laboratory where I was comparing the plant’s strengths to diclofenac and I discovered that it was very comparable, in its role in terms of treatment of arthritis in the lab. Of course, further tests are required to do validation and dosages,” said Dr Ncube.

“As a herbal supplement, the plant has potential to be used and explored to complement herbal medicine, especially in arthritis-related conditions.”

Dr Ncube said during her site studies, she discovered that the plant is used by many indigenous people in rural communities in areas such as Hwange, Tsholotsho, Matobo and Gwanda districts.

“The people use it for many different reasons, such as cultural uses and most importantly it’s used to treat headaches, pain inflammation and also use it for their animals as well,” she said.

Dr Ncube said funding for research purposes is the main challenge for most PhD students.

“Access to funding is not as easy, but I was fortunate that Nust and Buy Innovations Zimbabwe funded me to kick start this study. I started off by collecting my samples and ecological surveys and was also helped by Higher Life Zimbabwe in 2019 to conduct my laboratory work,” she said.

Dr Ncube said Covid-19 disruptions also affected her studies.

 “When Covid-19 hit the country in March 2020, I couldn’t travel to South Africa to do laboratory tests as well as going to the field to collect data. However, the samples were stored at Nust, and then there was a lockdown,” she said.

Dr Ncube said intermittent power cuts also affected her studies since the samples are kept in freezers because they require low temperatures.

“I had to wait for last year’s rainy season so that the plants could grow again and then collect more samples. My long-term plan is to continue contributing to research and education,” she said. -@bonganinkunzi

The University would like to advise all students that the First Semester Undergraduate Examinations, which were due to commence on Monday 21 November 2022, have been re-scheduled to begin on Monday 16 January 2023 and end on Friday 3 February 2023. Face-to-face lessons for untaught courses across all Faculties will begin on Monday 21 November 2022 and end on Friday 16 December 2022.

A detailed examinations timetable will be circulated in due course.

THE National University of Science and Technology (NUST) campus radio has gone on air with its first live broadcasting coinciding with the institution’s 28th graduation ceremony last Friday.

Broadcasting under the frequency NUST FM 101.1, the station is largely a music one with a phased-out programming expected to go full throttle by the end of the year. NUST communication and marketing director Mr Thabani Mpofu described the development as a milestone that would help both the students and the community.

“We are now on air and we are currently doing phased out programming. We are largely playing music but at the end of the year we expect to be doing full programming. This is a very important development as it gives us a platform to engage with our community in terms of research output and other programmes. It is also a platform that gives a voice to our students,” said Mr Mpofu.

 He said as an institution, their focus was to promote entrepreneurial curriculum, hence the station would impact students with those skills. Mr Mpofu said the station would not only benefit journalism students but would give students from other departments who have a passion in broadcasting an opportunity to partake as well. NUST Media and broadcasting expert Mr Makhosi Sibanda said the station was a source of information for students and the community.

“This campus radio station is going to be a source of information for the students and the greater community around NUST. The institution is a community of interest so even communities around it will benefit from the programming. It is also going to be a forum for expression and collective bargaining in terms of solving various societal needs,” said Mr Sibanda

 Five other higher learning institutions were granted licences by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) namely Lupane State University (LSU), Midlands State University (MSU), University of Zimbabwe (UZ), the Harare Polytechnic and the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) as part of the Second Republic’s efforts of opening up airwaves. – @nyeve14
