Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Nursing Sciences (Normal Entry)
REGULATIONS
These regulations should be read in conjunction with the General Academic Regulations of National University of Science and Technology (NUST) for undergraduate degrees at NUST.
The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Nursing ((BSN- Hon) is offered by the Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and leads to a skilled and competent nursing practitioner.
The programme is specifically designed to develop a graduate nursing practitioner capable of applying the recommended essential competencies for nursing practice. The graduate nurse should develop critical analytic skills necessary for making informed decisions in the provision of evidence based practice. He/she is capable of providing client-centred care and respectful care in both hospital and community settings; and promote culturally sensitive care as well as apply reflective thinking.
The aim of the Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Nursing is to train competent nurse practitioner who is able to utilize the concepts learnt to holistically assess clients, diagnose nursing care needs, plan for nursing care activities, implement nursing care plans and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care rendered to individual clients, families and communities in various settings.
Programme Outcomes
The graduate should demonstrate the following competencies:
- Apply requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to nursing practice
- Utilize the concepts learnt from anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, psychology and sociology in the holistic management of nursing care needs of clients.
- Conduct, critique and utilize nursing research to improve the quality of nursing care
- Communicate effectively with clients and other health care professionals
- Competent practice of nursing guided by professional code of conduct, the nursing process and nursing models
- Design innovative strategies to advance the nursing industry (profession) in fostering high levels of expertise in performing multiple (simple, complex and specialized) nursing interventions simultaneously
DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
The duration of the programme shall be 4 year full-time instruction.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for admission the candidate must have the following
Normal Entry
- 2- A-Level passes in Science Subjects
- 5- O level passes including English, Mathematics and Science.
Special Entry
- Diploma in General Nursing
- 5-Ordinary level passes with English and a Science subject
- An ‘A’ level qualification will be an added advantage.
- Be registered with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe and have a current Practicing Certificate
